news.yahoo.com — Taking menopause hormones for five years doubles the risk for breast cancer, according to a new analysis of a big federal study that reveals the most dramatic evidence yet of the dangers of these still-popular pills. Even women who took estrogen and progestin pills for as little as a couple of years had a greater chance of getting cancer. And when they stopped taking them, their odds quickly improved, returning to a normal risk level roughly two years after quitting. Collectively, these new findings are likely to end any doubt that the risks outweigh the benefits for most women. read more...

news.yahoo.com — WASHINGTON – The rate of new cancer cases finally may be inching down — cautiously optimistic news but a gain that specialists worry could be derailed by economic turmoil. Death rates from cancer have been dropping slowly for years, thanks to earlier detection and better treatments. But preventing cancer is the ultimate goal, and Tuesday's annual "Report to the Nation" on cancer also shows a small but encouraging change: The rate of new diagnoses among men dropped 1.8 percent a year between 2001 and 2005. For women, the dip was just over half a percent a year. Also, the cancer death rate among men and women continued to drop, by an average of 1.8 percent a year through 2005, said the report published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. read more...

news.yahoo.com — For the first time since researchers began reporting national data on cancer, the statistics in a new report show that the rate of newly diagnosed cancers is declining in America; at the same time, the death rate for all cancers combined continues to fall. "It's a validation of the efforts we are making in the fight against cancer," says Dr. Therese Bevers, medical director of clinical cancer prevention at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; she was not involved in the new paper. (See TIME's study of breast cancer around the world.) Overall, cancer death rates have been dropping since the early 1990s - the most recent data suggest that death rates have decreased for 10 of the 15 most common causes of cancer death in the U.S. - in large part as a result of earlier screening and better treatments. But this year's Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer marks the first concurrent decline in incidence, or the rate of new cancer diagnoses. For both American men and women, the incidence of all cancers combined decreased 0.8% per year from 1999 through 2005. That overall decline was largely driven by men, however: cancer incidence dropped 1.8% per year from 2001 through 2005 for men but just 0.6% per year from 1998 through 2005 for women. read more...

news.yahoo.com — DUBLIN (AFP) – Irish pork was removed from sale in Europe and Asia on Monday due to fears of a cancer link, as Ireland scrambled to find the source of the scare. Japan, Singapore and South Korea suspended imports from Ireland after Dublin ordered all pig meat products made since September 1 to be withdrawn as dioxins were found in slaughtered pigs thought to have eaten tainted feed. The European Commission said 12 countries in the European Union and nine others may have received contaminated meat, but said it would not impose a blanket ban on Irish pork exports. Irish police joined the investigation into a pig feed company suspected of being behind the contamination, which has caused panic in Ireland at a time when many families would have been buying their traditional Christmas ham. read more...

news.yahoo.com — Cancer will overtake heart disease as the world's top killer by 2010, part of a trend that should more than double global cancer cases and deaths by 2030, international health experts said in a report released Tuesday. Rising tobacco use in developing countries is believed to be a huge reason for the shift, particularly in China and India, where 40 percent of the world's smokers now live. So is better diagnosing of cancer, along with the downward trend in infectious diseases that used to be the world's leading killers. Cancer diagnoses around the world have steadily been rising and are expected to hit 12 million this year. Global cancer deaths are expected to reach 7 million, according to the new report by the World Health Organization. read more...

news.yahoo.com — SAN ANTONIO – New research adds fresh hope that a drug that strengthens bones might also fight breast cancer. Women who were given the drug, Zometa, as part of their initial treatment had greater tumor shrinkage and were less likely to need radical surgery, according to a preliminary study reported Thursday at a cancer conference in Texas. In June, doctors were stunned when a big study found that Zometa — given to prevent bone loss caused by certain cancer treatments — also greatly cut the risk that cancer would recur in women who developed the disease before menopause. Cancer specialists are eagerly awaiting the final results of a second, ongoing study testing Zometa in 3,360 women who had breast cancer after menopause — a much more common situation. read more...

news.yahoo.com — (HealthDay News) -- If you have a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with cancer, you may be puzzled about how you can help. The American Cancer Society offers these suggestions: * Prepare meals to keep on hand, or deliver meals each day at certain times, so the person doesn't have to worry about what to eat. * Help out with the kids by driving them to and from school, practices and other activities. * Drive the loved one to and from doctor appointments. * Fill in for him or her when not feeling well. Run errands, take care of chores, or just answer the phone. * Research the disease so you can discuss what the person is going through. read more...

news.yahoo.com — The racial gap in colon cancer death rates is widening, a new report says, and experts partly blame blacks' lower screening rates and poor access to quality care. Colon and rectal cancer death rates are now nearly 50 percent higher in blacks than in whites, according to American Cancer Society research being released Monday. The gap has been growing since the mid-1970s, when colon cancer death rates for the two racial groups were nearly equal. read more...

news.yahoo.com — Some advanced lung cancer patients already treated with chemotherapy might be able to skip some of the bad side effects of another series of chemo by taking a pill instead, a study suggests. An international study showed patients on Iressa, an expensive, newer targeted treatment, survived about as long as those on another course of chemotherapy. "This will provide us with another drug in our armory," said Dr. Michael Seckl, head of Cancer Research UK's Lung Cancer Group at Imperial College in London. Seckl was not connected to the research, which was published Friday in the Lancet medical journal. Few treatments for lung cancer exist, and most patients die within a few years of diagnosis. Lung cancer kills about 1.4 million people every year. read more...

news.yahoo.com — STOCKHOLM (AFP) – Sweden will offer vaccines against cervical cancer to all primary school girls as part of the country's free vaccination programme, the National Board of Health and Welfare said Monday. "Starting on January 1, 2010, the school healthcare system must offer HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccines to girls in the fifth and sixth grade (around 10-11 years old)," it wrote in a statement. HPV is a common virus spread through sexual contact. The vaccine prevents the most common types of HPV that can cause cervical cancer. "In the long run, this means that around 100 women a year will be spared from dying of cervical cancer" in Sweden, the board said. read more...
